MathLab with Mr. Ahmed is a math learning website by Ahmed Amasha, a mathematics teacher teaching the American curriculum. Explore Algebra 2, Precalculus, Calculus, and SAT and PSAT Math Prep through lessons, focused practice and printable resources.
Partition the interval, choose sample points, and sum height times width. The choice of sample point changes a finite approximation.

Area as a limit
Refining rectangles leads to an integral when the function is integrable. Simple geometry can verify some exact results.
Worked example 1
Estimate the area below f(x)=x on [0,2] using one right-endpoint rectangle.
Interval width =2
Ar=2⋅2=4
Answer:4
Worked example 2
Estimate the area below f(x)=x on [0,3] using two midpoint rectangles.
Interval width =3
Aₘ =23(0.75+2.25)=29≈4.5
Answer:29≈4.5

Geometric versus signed area
An integral counts area below the axis negatively. Total geometric area requires absolute values or splitting at zeros.
Worked example 1
For f(x)=x on [−2,2], find the signed integral.
∫−20xdx=−24; ∫02xdx=24
Signed area =−24+24=0
Answer:0
Worked example 2
For f(x)=x on [−3,3], find the total geometric area.
∫−30xdx=−29; ∫03xdx=29
Geometric area =29+29=9
Answer:9
