Ideas in this lesson
Idea 1 of 3
Distinct linear factors
Assign one numerator constant to each distinct linear factor. Clear denominators to solve for the constants.
Worked example 1
Write x(x+2)1=xA+x+2B. Find A. - Multiply by x(x+2): 1=A(x+2)+Bx.
- At x=0,A=21.
- At x=−2,B=−21.
- A=21≈0.5
Answer: 21≈0.5
Worked example 2
Write x(x+3)1=xA+x+3B. Find B. - Multiply by x(x+3): 1=A(x+3)+Bx.
- At x=0,A=31.
- At x=−3,B=−31.
- B=3−1≈−0.33
Answer: 3−1≈−0.33
Idea 2 of 3
Integrate the decomposition
Each simple reciprocal linear term integrates to a logarithm, with its scale factor and domain restrictions.
Worked example 1
Evaluate ∫12x(x+2)1dx. - x(x+2)1=21[x1−x+21]
- F(x)=21ln∣x+2x∣
- F(2)−F(1)=2ln(46)=2ln(46)≈0.2
Answer: 2ln(46)≈0.2
Worked example 2
Evaluate ∫13x(x+3)1dx. - x(x+3)1=31[x1−x+31]
- F(x)=31ln∣x+3x∣
- F(3)−F(1)=3ln(612)=3ln(612)≈0.23
Answer: 3ln(612)≈0.23
Idea 3 of 3
Check decomposition coefficients
Expand or substitute into the cleared-denominator identity. Coefficients must reproduce the entire original numerator.
