Ideas in this lesson
Idea 1 of 3
Represent rational functions
Transform a rational function into a scaled geometric-series form and retain its convergence restriction.
Worked example 1
In the Maclaurin expansion of 1−2x1, find the coefficient of x2. - 1−2x1=∑(2x)n,∣x∣<21
- (2x)n=2nxn
- Coefficient of x2=22=4
Answer: 4
Worked example 2
In the Maclaurin expansion of 1−3x1, find the coefficient of x3. - 1−3x1=∑(3x)n,∣x∣<31
- (3x)n=3nxn
- Coefficient of x3=33=27
Answer: 27
Idea 2 of 3
Term-by-term integration
A power series may be integrated inside its radius. Determine the integration constant separately and retest endpoints.
Worked example 1
For −2ln(1−x)=∑(n=1 to ∞)n2xn, find the coefficient of x2. - ∫0x2∑tndt=∑n+12xn+1=−2ln(1−x),∣x∣<1
- x=0⟹C=0
- Coefficient of x2=22=1
Answer: 1
Worked example 2
For −3ln(1−x)=∑(n=1 to ∞)n3xn, find the coefficient of x3. - ∫0x3∑tndt=∑n+13xn+1=−3ln(1−x),∣x∣<1
- x=0⟹C=0
- Coefficient of x3=33=1
Answer: 1
Idea 3 of 3
Term-by-term differentiation
Differentiate each monomial within the radius. The radius stays the same, but endpoint behavior may change.
Worked example 1
For ∣x∣<2,f(x)=2−x1=∑ from n=0 to ∞ of 2n+1xn. Find the coefficient of x2 in f′(x). - f′(x)=∑ from n=1 to ∞ of 2n+1nxn−1
- n−1=2⟹n=3
- Coefficient =243
Answer: 163≈0.19
Worked example 2
For ∣x∣<3,f(x)=3−x1=∑ from n=0 to ∞ of 3n+1xn. Find the coefficient of x3 in f′(x). - f′(x)=∑ from n=1 to ∞ of 3n+1nxn−1
- n−1=3⟹n=4
- Coefficient =354
Answer: 2434≈0.02
