6.3 Trigonometric Functions of Angles

At (x,y)(x,y) with r=x2+y2,sin⁡θ=yrr=\sqrt{x^{2}+y^{2}}, \sin \theta =\frac{y}{r} and cos⁡θ=xr\cos \theta =\frac{x}{r}.

Worked example 11
01 / A terminal point is (12,16)(12,16). Find cos⁡θ\cos \theta .
02 / r=(12)2+(16)2=20r=\sqrt{(12)^{2}+(16)^{2}}=20; xr=35\dfrac{x}{r}=\dfrac{3}{5}.
03 / Answer: 35\dfrac{3}{5}
Worked example 2 · Tangent from coordinates

A terminal point is (4,6)(4,6). Find tan⁡θ\tan \theta .

tan⁡θ=yx=64\tan \theta =\dfrac{y}{x}=\dfrac{6}{4}. Answer: 64\dfrac{6}{4}
