Polynomials: vocabulary, degree, addition and subtraction · Worked example
Subtract \((3x^{2}+5x-2)-(x^{2}-4x+5)\).
Answer: \(2 x^{2} + 9 x - 7\)
Distribute the subtraction sign to every term of the second polynomial.
This gives \(3x^{2}+5x-2-x^{2}+4x-5\).
Combine like terms to obtain \(2 x^{2} + 9 x - 7\).
This gives \(3x^{2}+5x-2-x^{2}+4x-5\).
Combine like terms to obtain \(2 x^{2} + 9 x - 7\).
