Measures of center
The mean uses every observation; the median uses the ordered middle position.
Quartiles and interquartile range
State a quartile convention; the interquartile range is the upper quartile minus the lower quartile.
Standard deviation
For a population, average squared deviations over the population size before taking the square root.
Outliers and resistant summaries
An outlier can strongly affect the mean; the median and interquartile range are usually more resistant.
