5.3 Function operations and composition
Unit 5 · Rational exponents and radical functions
Ideas in this lesson
Arithmetic with functions
Evaluate each function first, then add, subtract, multiply or divide its outputs. Division requires a nonzero divisor output.
Domains of combined functions
Intersect the original domains. For a quotient, also exclude every input that makes its denominator zero.
Compose functions
In a composition, evaluate the inside function first and use its output as the outside input.
Domains of compositions
The input must belong to the inside function domain, and its output must belong to the outside function domain.
