Idea 1 of 3
Direct substitution and algebraic simplification
Continuous rules allow direct substitution. A00 form requires analysis; it is not a limit value.
Worked example 1
Evaluate x→2lim(x2+1). - f(2)=22+1
- x→2lim(x2+1)=5
Answer: 5
Worked example 2
Evaluate x→3limx−3x2−9. - x2−9=(x−3)(x+3)
- x−3x2−9=x+3(x=3)
- x→3lim(x+3)=6
Answer: 6

Trigonometric limits
In radians, usinu tends to 1 near zero. Adjust the inner scale before applying this limit.
Worked example 1
Evaluate x→0limxsin(2x)( angles in radians ). - xsin(2x)=22xsin(2x)
- 2⋅1=2
Answer: 2
Worked example 2
Evaluate x→0limx21−cos(3x)( angles in radians ). - x21−cos(3x)=x2(1+cos(3x))sin2(3x)
- 1+19=29≈4.5
Answer: 29≈4.5
Idea 3 of 3
The Squeeze Theorem
If two bounding functions have the same limit, any function trapped between them has that limit.
Worked example 1
Use the Squeeze Theorem to evaluate x→0limxsin(x2). - −∣x∣≤xsin(x2)≤∣x∣
- x→0lim∣x∣=0
- x→0limxsin(x2)=0
Answer: 0
Worked example 2
Use the Squeeze Theorem to evaluate x→0limx2sin(x3). - −∣x∣2≤x2sin(x3)≤∣x∣2
- x→0lim∣x∣2=0
- x→0limx2sin(x3)=0
Answer: 0
