MathLab with Mr. Ahmed is a math learning website by Ahmed Amasha, a mathematics teacher teaching the American curriculum. Explore Algebra 2, Precalculus, Calculus, and SAT and PSAT Math Prep through lessons, focused practice and printable resources.
For a continuous function on a closed interval, compare values at endpoints and all interior critical numbers.

Idea 2 of 3
Critical numbers
Critical numbers occur within the domain where f′ is zero or does not exist. A critical number need not be an extremum.
Worked example 1
For f(x)=x3−12x, find the positive critical number.
f′(x)=3(x−2)(x+2)=0⟹x=±2
f′(x)>0 on (−∞,−2) and (2,∞); f′(x)<0 on (−2,2)

Worked example 2
For f(x)=x3−27x, find the local minimum value.
f′(x)=3(x−3)(x+3)=0⟹x=±3

Idea 3 of 3
Local versus absolute extrema
A local comparison concerns nearby inputs; an absolute comparison concerns the entire specified domain.
