Slant asymptotes
Polynomial division gives f(x)=mx+c+a remainder tending to zero. The slant asymptote is y=mx+c.
Worked example 1
For f(x)=xx2+2x+1, find the y-intercept of its slant asymptote. - f(x)=x+2+x1
- x→±∞lim[f(x)−(x+2)]=limx1=0
- Slant asymptote: y=x+2; y-intercept =2
Answer: 2
Worked example 2
For f(x)=xx2+3x+2, find the y-intercept of its slant asymptote. - f(x)=x+3+x2
- x→±∞lim[f(x)−(x+3)]=limx2=0
- Slant asymptote: y=x+3; y-intercept =3
Answer: 3

Leading terms at infinity
Divide a rational expression by its highest relevant power. Compare the surviving terms rather than substituting infinity.
Worked example 1
Evaluate x→∞lim2x2+32x2+1. - 2x2+32x2+1=2+x232+x21
- x1→0,x21→0(x→∞)
- 2+02+0=1
Answer: 1
Worked example 2
Evaluate x→∞limx2+1x+3. - x2+1x+3=1+x21x1+x23
- x1→0,x21→0(x→∞)
- 1+00+0=0
Answer: 0

Horizontal asymptotes
A finite limit at positive or negative infinity defines a horizontal asymptote. A graph may cross it.
Worked example 1
Find the horizontal asymptote height of f(x)=x2+22x2−1. - f(x)=1+x222−x21
- x→±∞limf(x)=12
- Horizontal asymptote: y=2
Answer: 2
Worked example 2
Find the horizontal asymptote height of f(x)=2x2+23x2−1. - f(x)=2+x223−x21
- x→±∞limf(x)=23
- Horizontal asymptote: y=23≈1.5
Answer: 23≈1.5

Different numerator and denominator degrees
A lower numerator degree gives limit zero; equal degrees give a coefficient ratio; a higher degree requires further analysis.
Worked example 1
Evaluate x→∞lim2x2+32x2+1. - 2x2+32x2+1=2+x232+x21
- x1→0,x21→0(x→∞)
- 2+02+0=1
Answer: 1
Worked example 2
Evaluate x→∞limx2+1x+3. - x2+1x+3=1+x21x1+x23
- x1→0,x21→0(x→∞)
- 1+00+0=0
Answer: 0
