Logarithm properties and derivatives
For positive inputs, ln(xn)=nlnx. Simplify the logarithm before differentiating.
Worked example 1
For x>0, simplify ln(x2)+ln(e2). Find its derivative at x=1. - ln(x2)+ln(e2)=2lnx+2
- f′(x)=x2
- f′(1)=2
Answer: 2
Worked example 2
For x>0, simplify ln(x3)+ln(e3). Find its derivative at x=1. - ln(x3)+ln(e3)=3lnx+3
- f′(x)=x3
- f′(1)=3
Answer: 3
Idea 2 of 4
Derivative of a logarithm
For positive u, differentiate lnu as uu′. For ln∣u∣, the same rule holds where u is nonzero.
Worked example 1
Find f′(1) for f(x)=lnx. - u=x; u′=1
- f′(x)=x1
- f′(1)=1
Answer: 1
Worked example 2
Find f′(2) for f(x)=ln(3x+1). - u=3x+1; u′=3
- f′(x)=3x+13
- f′(2)=73≈0.43
Answer: 73≈0.43
Idea 3 of 4
Logarithmic differentiation
Take logs to simplify products, quotients, and variable powers. Differentiate, then multiply by the original y.
Worked example 1
Use logarithmic differentiation to find y′ at x=2 for y=xx. - lny=xlnx
- yy′=lnx+1
- y′=xx(lnx+1)
- y′(2)=4(ln2+1)≈6.77
Answer: 4(ln2+1)≈6.77
Worked example 2
Use logarithmic differentiation to find y′ at x=3 for y=(x2+1)3. - lny=3ln(x2+1)
- yy′=x2+16x
- y′=6x(x2+1)2
- y′(3)=1800
Answer: 1800
Idea 4 of 4
Logarithm with a composite input
A logarithm does not cancel its inner derivative. Apply the chain rule before evaluating.
Worked example 1
Find f′(1) for f(x)=lnx. - u=x; u′=1
- f′(x)=x1
- f′(1)=1
Answer: 1
Worked example 2
Find f′(2) for f(x)=ln(3x+1). - u=3x+1; u′=3
- f′(x)=3x+13
- f′(2)=73≈0.43
Answer: 73≈0.43
