Idea 1 of 3
Separation of variables
Move y-dependent factors to dy and x-dependent factors to dx, integrate, and use the initial condition. Check for lost equilibrium solutions.
Worked example 1
Solve y′=2xy,y(0)=1. Find y(1). - ydy=2xdx
- lny=22x2+C; y(0)=1⟹C=0
- y=e22x2
- y(1)=e≈2.72
Answer: e≈2.72
Worked example 2
Solve y′=3xy,y(0)=1. Find lny(2). - ydy=3xdx
- lny=23x2+C; y(0)=1⟹C=0
- y=e23x2
- lny(2)=23(2)2=6
Answer: 6
Idea 2 of 3
Logistic equilibria
In P′= rP (1−KP), zero and K are equilibria; K is the carrying capacity for the standard growth model.
Worked example 1
A population obeys P′=0.1P(1−200P). Find its positive equilibrium. - P′=0.1P(1−200P)=0⟹P=0,200
- dPdP′=0.1(1−2002P)=0⟹P=100
- Positive equilibrium =200
Answer: 200
Worked example 2
A population obeys P′=0.2P(1−300P). Find the population where growth is fastest. - P′=0.2P(1−300P)=0⟹P=0,300
- dPdP′=0.2(1−3002P)=0⟹P=150
- Population for fastest growth =150
Answer: 150
Idea 3 of 3
Fastest logistic growth
The rate is a concave-down quadratic in P. Its maximum occurs at half the carrying capacity.
Worked example 1
A population obeys P′=0.1P(1−200P). Find its positive equilibrium. - P′=0.1P(1−200P)=0⟹P=0,200
- dPdP′=0.1(1−2002P)=0⟹P=100
- Positive equilibrium =200
Answer: 200
Worked example 2
A population obeys P′=0.2P(1−300P). Find the population where growth is fastest. - P′=0.2P(1−300P)=0⟹P=0,300
- dPdP′=0.2(1−3002P)=0⟹P=150
- Population for fastest growth =150
Answer: 150
