A disk’s area is πR2. Integrate cross-sectional area with respect to the coordinate perpendicular to the slices.
Worked example 1
Rotate the region below y=x on [0,2] about the x-axis. Find πV.
R=x; cross-section =πx2
πV=∫02x2dx
πV=323=38≈2.67
Answer:38≈2.67
Worked example 2
Rotate the region below y=x2 on [0,3] about the x-axis. Find πV.
R=x2; cross-section =πx4
πV=∫03x4dx
πV=535=5243≈48.6
Answer:5243≈48.6
Idea 2 of 3
Washer volumes
Subtract the inner disk: π(R2−r2). Squaring a difference of radii is incorrect.
Worked example 1
Rotate the region between y=5 and y=1 on [0,2] about the x-axis. Find πV.
R=5; r=1
πA=R2−r2=24
πV=2[52−12]=48
Answer:48
Worked example 2
Rotate the region between y=6 and y=2 on [0,3] about the x-axis. Find πV.
R=6; r=2
πA=R2−r2=32
πV=3[62−22]=96
Answer:96
Idea 3 of 3
Surface area is not volume
Rotation can also create a curved surface. Surface area uses circumference times arc-length element, rather than disk area.
Worked example 1
Rotate y=x on [0,2] about the x-axis. Find the curved surface area divided by π.
y=x; y′=1
πS=∫022(1)x2dx
πS=1(2)22=42≈5.66
Answer:42≈5.66
Worked example 2
Rotate y=2x on [0,3] about the x-axis. Find the curved surface area divided by π.
y=2x; y′=2
πS=∫032(2)x5dx
πS=2(3)25=185≈40.25
Answer:185≈40.25
