Rewrite xlnx as lnx divided by x1 before applying L’Hopital.
Worked example 1
Evaluate x→0+lim2xlnx.
xlnx=x1lnx; form ∞−∞
limx1lnx=lim−x21x1=lim(−x)=0
x→0+lim2xlnx=2⋅0=0
Answer:0
Worked example 2
Evaluate x→0+lim3xlnx.
xlnx=x1lnx; form ∞−∞
limx1lnx=lim−x21x1=lim(−x)=0
x→0+lim3xlnx=3⋅0=0
Answer:0

Variable-power limits
Take logarithms of a positive variable power. Evaluate the logarithmic limit, then exponentiate.
Worked example 1
Evaluate x→0lim(1+2x)x1.
y=(1+2x)x1; lny=xln(1+2x)
limlny=lim1+2x2=2
limy=e2=e2≈7.39
Answer:e2≈7.39
Worked example 2
Evaluate x→0lim(1+3x)x1.
y=(1+3x)x1; lny=xln(1+3x)
limlny=lim1+3x3=3
limy=e3=e3≈20.09
Answer:e3≈20.09

L’Hopital’s Rule
Apply the rule only after verifying a00 or ∞∞ form and its hypotheses. Differentiate numerator and denominator separately.
Worked example 1
Evaluate x→0limxsin(2x) using L’Hopital’s Rule.
Numerator →0; denominator →0⟹ form 00
x→0lim12cos(2x)
2cos0=2
Answer:2
Worked example 2
Evaluate x→0limxe3x−1 using L’Hopital’s Rule.
Numerator →0; denominator →0⟹ form 00
x→0lim13e3x
3e0=3
Answer:3
Idea 4 of 5
Other indeterminate forms
Rewrite products, differences, or variable powers as a quotient or logarithmic limit before applying the rule.
Worked example 1
Is ∞∞ an indeterminate form?
xlimx=1,xlimx2=∞,x2limx=0(x→∞)
∞∞⟹ indeterminate: distinct example limits above
Answer: Yes
Worked example 2
Is 0⋅∞ an indeterminate form?
limx(x1)=1,limx(x1)=0(x→0+)
0⋅∞⟹ indeterminate: distinct example limits above
Answer: Yes

Repeated applications
A first application can leave another indeterminate form. Recheck the form before applying the rule again.
Worked example 1
Evaluate x→0limxsin(2x) using L’Hopital’s Rule.
Numerator →0; denominator →0⟹ form 00
x→0lim12cos(2x)
2cos0=2
Answer:2
Worked example 2
Evaluate x→0limxe3x−1 using L’Hopital’s Rule.
Numerator →0; denominator →0⟹ form 00
x→0lim13e3x
3e0=3
Answer:3
