Idea 1 of 3
Alternating Series Test
Decreasing term magnitudes tending to zero guarantee convergence of an alternating series.
Worked example 1
Classify ∑(n=1 to ∞)n2⋅−1n+1. - bn=n1 ↓ 0; bn+1<bn
- ∑(−1)n+1bn converges by the Alternating Series Test
- ∑∣an∣=∑n1 diverges (p≤1)⟹ Conditionally convergent
Answer: Conditionally convergent
Worked example 2
Classify ∑(n=1 to ∞)n23⋅−1n+1. - bn=n21 ↓ 0; bn+1<bn
- ∑(−1)n+1bn converges by the Alternating Series Test
- ∑∣an∣=∑n21 converges (p>1)⟹ Absolutely convergent
Answer: Absolutely convergent
Idea 2 of 3
Alternating error bound
The error after n terms is no larger than the magnitude of term n+1 under the test’s hypotheses.
Worked example 1
After 2 terms of ∑n−1n+1, give the Alternating Series error bound. - ∣R2∣≤b3
- ∣R2∣≤31=31≈0.33
Answer: 31≈0.33
Worked example 2
After 3 terms of ∑n2−1n+1, give the Alternating Series error bound. - ∣R3∣≤b4
- ∣R3∣≤421=161≈0.06
Answer: 161≈0.06
Idea 3 of 3
Absolute and conditional convergence
Test the absolute-value series separately. Conditional convergence means the signed series converges but the absolute series does not.
Worked example 1
Classify ∑ from n=1 to ∞ of n2(−1)n+1. - bn=n2; bn+1≤bn; limbn=0⟹ alternating series converges
- ∑∣an∣=∑n2 diverges (p=1)
- Classification = Conditionally convergent
Answer: Conditionally convergent
Worked example 2
Classify ∑ from n=1 to ∞ of n23(−1)n+1. - bn=n23; bn+1≤bn; limbn=0⟹ alternating series converges
- ∑∣an∣=∑n23 converges (p=2>1)
- Classification = Absolutely convergent
Answer: Absolutely convergent
