Taylor polynomial construction
The coefficient at degree k is f⁽k⁾ka!, multiplying (x−a)k. A degree −n polynomial stops after degree n.
Worked example 1
For f(x)=x3, find the coefficient of (x−2) in the Taylor polynomial centered at 2. - f′(x)=3x2; f′′(x)=6x; f‴(x)=6
- c1=1!3(2)2=12
Answer: 12
Worked example 2
For f(x)=x3, find the coefficient of (x−3)2 in the Taylor polynomial centered at 3. - f′(x)=3x2; f′′(x)=6x; f‴(x)=6
- c2=2!6(3)=9
Answer: 9
Idea 2 of 3
Approximate a function value
Substitute into a finite Taylor polynomial near its center. More terms change the approximation, not the exact function.
Worked example 1
Use the degree −1 Maclaurin polynomial of ex to estimate e0.5. - f⁽k⁾(0)=1; P1(x)=1x0+1x
- P1(21)=23≈1.5
Answer: 23≈1.5
Worked example 2
Use the degree −2 Maclaurin polynomial of ex to estimate e0.3333333333. - f⁽k⁾(0)=1; P2(x)=1x0+1x+2x2
- P2(31)=1825≈1.39
Answer: 1825≈1.39
Idea 3 of 3
Taylor error bound
Bound the next derivative on the interval and apply the Lagrange remainder formula.
Worked example 1
For ex on [0,0.5], give the Lagrange error bound of its degree −1 Maclaurin polynomial. - M=e21; n=1
- ∣R1(21)∣≤2!e21(21)2=8e21≈0.21
Answer: 8e21≈0.21
Worked example 2
For ex on [0,0.3333333333], give the Lagrange error bound of its degree −2 Maclaurin polynomial. - M=e31; n=2
- ∣R2(31)∣≤3!e31(31)3=162e31≈0.00861
Answer: 162e31≈0.00861
