1.4 Rational Expressions

Use a common denominator before adding or subtracting rational expressions. Factor before canceling common factors.

Remember
Cancel common factors, never individual terms in a sum. Keep all original domain restrictions.
Worked example 11
01 / Find the real domain of x+1x2−9\dfrac{x+1}{x^{2}-9}.
02 / The numerator does not restrict this rational expression.
03 / Factor the denominator: x2−9=(x−3)(x+3)x^{2}-9=(x-3)(x+3).
04 / Both denominator zeros must be excluded: x≠±3x\ne\pm3.
Worked example 2 · Domain of an algebraic expression

Find the real domain of 4−x\sqrt{4-x}.

A square root allows zero but does not allow a negative radicand.
Require 4−x≥04-x\ge0, which is equivalent to x≤4x\le4.
Including the endpoint gives (−∞,4](-\infty,4].
