1.3 Algebraic Expressions

Distribute multiplication across every term. To factor x2+bx+cx^{2} + bx + c, find two numbers with sum bb and product cc.

Remember
Check a factorization by multiplying back.
Worked example 11
01 / For 3x4−3x2+7x−53x^{4}-3x^{2}+7x-5, identify the degree and leading coefficient.
02 / The expression is already ordered by descending powers.
03 / The greatest exponent is 44, so the degree is 44.
04 / The coefficient multiplying that highest power is 33.
Worked example 2 · Polynomials: vocabulary, degree, addition and subtraction

Add (4x2−3x+4)+(2x2+5x−4)(4x^{2}-3x+4)+(2x^{2}+5x-4).

Group the quadratic terms, linear terms, and constants separately.
The coefficients become 4+2=64+2=6, −3+5=2-3+5=2, and 4−4=04-4=0.
Combine only those like terms to obtain 6x2+2x6 x^{2} + 2 x.
